The Italian poet Edoardo Sanguinetti is the winner of the "Golden Wreath" for the year 2000. "I always attend the "Struga Poetry Evenings" with great pleasure. This is my third time and the pleasure is even grater as I am the winner of the award. I am really happy," Sanguinetti stated. "This is a recognition for the Italian poetry and will contribute to strengthening of the cultural co-operation between Macedonia and Italy. Naturally, few people are familiar with the Macedonian poetry and literature. However, this is going to be an outstanding opportunity for developing of the cultural relations between the two countries.” Asked about his knowledge of the Macedonian poetry and authors, Sanguinetti expressed regret, saying that the main obstacle was the Macedonian language. "One knows a poetry if he knows the original language or some other language close to the original. One must also be familiar with most of the authors," Sanguinetti said. Edouardo Sanguinetti is the second Italian poet, winner of the highest award of the "Struga Poetry Evenings". The first one was Eugenio Montale, who was awarded with the "Golden Wreath” in 1973. In 1961, he was one of the five poets presented in the anthology "Nuovissimi". Later, those poets established the "Group 63", which represented the new Italian avant-garde. He started his carrier as professor at the Philological Faculty in Torino. For a certain period, he lectured at the University in Salerno and in 1974, he taught Italian literature at the University of Genoa. He is founder and member of the European Academy of Poetry in Luxembourg and member - adviser of the manifestation "International Poetry" in Rotterdam. Sanguinetti has won many awards in Italy, and his work has been translated in several foreign languages. Besides poetry, Sanguinetti has also worked in the sphere of book reviews, writing essays, plays and librettos. He is an author of critical reviews of the works of several famous Italian writers, such as Dante, D'Anuncio, Gocano and Moravia.
